Horizon Line: ABR Contemporary, Miami Beach

3 March - 1 April 2023
Overview
“ABR Contemporary is excited to announce Horizon Line, a group show bringing together works by 19 artists. The portrayal of landscape serves as a device that allows the artist to divulge a more profound truth. While landscape is traditionally understood through painting, Horizon Line extends its focus to other media including photography, drawing, print, and sculpture.”

Betty Brown’s work often ignores the rigidity of traditional horizon lines in favor of a more playful approach to the landscape painting, and her three works included in this exhibition are no exception. In one painting (Untitled, 1997), the horizon suddenly plunges downward at a right angle, while in another work on paper (Untitled, 1992), the horizon is obscured entirely by trees that seem to float on top of each other underneath an island suspended in the sky. Through these unexpected twists on seemingly benign scenes, she expressed her idiosyncratic perspective which continues to surprise and delight viewers decades later.
